Bishopsgate Without, John Russon farthing

Obv: (mullet)IOHN:RVSSON:AT.YE , around linear inner circle, three stills.
Rev: (mullet)WITHOVT.BISHOP:GATE , around linear inner circle, (mullet)R(mullet) over (cinquefoil)I.E(cinquefoil) .

Robert Thompson thinks the three objects are probably stills. Although the bases of them are rectangular rather than rounded, and there's apparently nothing underneath them like brickwork or flames.

In "London Signs" by Bryant Lillywhite (publ. 1972) is listed "Three Stills - Bishopgate Street before 1761", which may well be the same establishment as this token, although it is very unlikely that this record is from a specimen of the token.

John Russon was assessed at 6 hearths in the east side of Bishopsgate without in 1662

Elizabeth Russon daughter of John & Elizabeth was baptised 24/Jun/1653 at St

Sarah Russen daughter of John & Mary was baptised 4/Jan/1690 at St Botolph

This is the only known example, published by myself in the Token Corresponding Society Bulletin, volume 10, number 7, page 275/6, June 2012.
