Richard Clarke was elected major in 1670 and again in 1678. The Angel stood at the top of the Market Place, the town corporation frequently met there. Also believed to be one of the coaching inns to sponsor the Derbyshire silver shilling token of c1811, it was apparently demolished in 1926 to permit expansion of the Westminster Bank Ltd.
