The Snowden Mountain Railway to the summit of Snowden opened to the public on the 6th April 1896. This medallion/pass is cast in high relief and shows on the obverse the No. 4 Snowden locomotive and a carriage crossing the Afon Hwch viaduct and on the reverse the badge of the company. A leaflet issued with the pass reads "The enclosed Railway Pass No. 9 has been especially cast by the Royal Mint for the Snowden Mountain Railway and entitles you to one free return journey to the summit during the 1981 season." and is signed by the Joint Managing Director A. O. E. Davies. Upon enquiry it is learnt that these passes were intdroduced in 1981 at the suggestion of one of the directors as a quality souvenir with the added benefit of a free return journey. They were not a success with only some 17 being sold. However, they were later given on a "Free Pass for Life" basis to retiring directors and visiting guests.
