Jacobs, in his " History of Faversham, 1774/' writes - " In 1648, the making of private traders' tokens commenced in London, and this year, 1649, and the succeeding ones, the example was followed by great numbers of our townsmen, even so low down as by the common porter's deputy, the backer of corn from the quays to the vessels in the creek, and continued until 1669 ; none of a later date having come within my observation."
