State of Louisiana Federal Medal to General Zachary Taylor 1848

Obverse: STATE OF LOUISIANA TO MAJ: GEN: ZACHARY TAYLOR. ; around a mother pelican feeding her young, JUSTICE and scales above, UNION AND CONFIDENCE and five stars below, barely discernible below the five stars are the designer and engravers names C. C. WRIGHT and P. P. Duggan.
Reverse: BUENAVISTA within a wreath, PALO ALTO. to left, RESACA DE LA PALMA. to right and MONTERAY. below; around battle scene at Buena Vista, with H.F.BALDWIN & Co.PUB. N.O. in small letters below.
Compostion: Copper. Diameter: 76 mm. Weight: 196.8 grams.

Far scarcer than the other Julian-listed medals of the Mexican War.
Struck in March 1848 by H. F. Baldwin & Co., New Orleans.
In November of 1848 Taylor was elected President and was inaugurated on 5 March 1849. On 4 July 1850 he became quite ill after suffering an attack of typhus fever and died five days later.
