Hirwaun, Francis Crawshay 1847 silver medal

Medal issued by Francis Crawshay to commemorate his taking over the management of Hirwaun Ironworks upon his brother Henry’s move to manage the family’s mining and smelting interests in the Forest of Dean in 1847.

Obverse: PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT (rosette) ; around ornate cap of merit with motto PALMAM QUI, 1847 below.
Reverse: FRANCIS CRAWSHAW --(rosette)-- ; around HIRWAIN.
Edge: Plain. Composition: Silver. Diameter: 38.1mm. Weight: 28.33 grams.

A little rough around the edges but impressive with the cap being in high relief.
Very rare.

PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT (Nelson's motto) - Let him who has deserved it, wear the crown. Caps of this shape were given to Roman slaves who had been set free.
