1849 Godless florin, the first English decimal coin
£50.00
Obv: VICTORIA REGINA 1849 - Victoria Queen 1849 , bust of Queen Victoria facing left, WW behind, not obliterated.
Rev: ONE FLORIN , above, ONE TENTH OF A POUND , below, around four cruciform shields with rose at centre; rose, thistle, rose and shamrock in angles.
GVF/NEF
Known as the "Godless florin" due to the omission of the term D.G. ( DEI GRATIA - by the grace of God). These coins were struck to test public opinion as the first step to the introduction of a decimal currency. Another rather unusual design at time, is that the portrait of Victoria is crowned, such a device not being seen on English coinage for nearly 200 years.
