Basingstoke, John Pinkerton 1789 shilling token
Hampshire, Basingstoke Canal, John Pinkerton One Shilling 1789:

Rev: JOHN PINKERTON , curved above, wheelbarrow and implements, VALUE ONE SHILLING in two lines below.
Material: Bronze. Edge: Engrailed. Diameter: 30.4 mm
Said to have passed current among the workmen engaged in making the canal. John Pinkerton was the Secretary, and doubtless several of the impressions would be given to shareholders and others, who would naturally be interested in the undertaking and also in the novel local currency.
