St. Katharine's, T D (A) AT THE 2 DRAY MEN farthing N8418
Obv: (mullet)AT(lozenge)THE(lozenge)2(lozenge)DRAY(lozenge)MEN , around two dray men carrying tun.
Rev: (mullet)IN(lozenge)S(lozenge)KATHERINS(lozenge)LANE , around cable inner circle, (lozenge)D(lozenge) over T(rosette)A .
Found in the river Thames near Southwark Cathedral August 1984, from M Chapel.
Ex P. D. Greenall; ex R. H. Thompson.
M. Dickinson 2607/8. Dies as Norweb 8418, this a far superior example.
The British Museum and Norweb examples of this obverse die variety were originally identified as Williamson 2607 due to the horizontal of the T initial being fainter than remainder of letter. This may have been the case with the Williamson 2607 example been identified as an I.
The King's brewery was in the olden time at St. Catherine's. Henry Machin, in his Diary-October 9, 1551-records: "Giles, the king's beer-brewer, dwelling at St. Catharine's, who had bled to death from a scratch on his leg, was buried this day at Aldgate, with heraldic emblazonments of his arms, and the craft of the Brewers."
The brewhouse was probably that spoken of elsewhere, in 1650, as the Bear Brewhouse. There are frequent illusions to it in the ballads of that day.-Vide No. 2624.
